Secret Bay

Secret Bay is Bali's most well-known muck diving site, popular with underwater macro photographers. The site is entered from the shore, into a sloping black sand beach. There are no large fish, no corals and no interesting underwater topography. However patient and curious divers will find a myriad of small, photogenic critters. Pipefish are common, Stonefish, seahorses and a variety of frogfishes. Nudibranches are also common and dragonet can sometimes be seen. Most of the divers visiting Secret Bay are underwater macro photographers. We have several macro photography specialized guides to guide you, subject to your advance booking. They can show you the secret and hidden underwater photography subjects.

Dives may be long in these shallow waters. With some dives not deeper than 7m / 25ft one tank of air can last a long time. The waters are often very cold, in the low 20's C / low 70's Fahrenheit. Divers should also note there is a short diving window. Outside this window the sea conditions (fast current and low visibility) make this site impossible to dive. A night dive may be planned here, subject to conditions. Divers should be warned that this site is filled with trash, and often green with algae. Luckily some items of trash encourage fish to dwell, including frogfish inside large tin cans, and lionfish sheltering in fishermen's nets.

Secret Bay (a.ka. Gilimanuk Bay) is the most remote site we dive, far from Sanur in North East Bali. There are few facilities there. The nearest decent accommodation is the Superior class of accommodation we use when diving this area. You can enjoy natural hot spring bathing, with infinity pools overlooking the mangroves and river estuary bordering this delightful resort. Sunset views from the beachside restaurant blend gently into moonlit tropical evenings. The flora and fauna are superb in this protected National Park.
